Blackbird
A juvenile blackbird tasting (and not liking) fallen sloe berries on the old disused railway line footpath, 31 August 2017.





Green woodpecker - male
A male green woodpecker hiding under the equipment in Parson's Close playground, 31 August 2017, early in the morning before any children have arrived. Males have a red centre in their "moustache".

Several male banded demoiselles were fighting for the best perches in the sun by the viewing platform on the Ouzel, 18 August 2017.





Pine hawk-moth larva
A pine hawk-moth larva (caterpillar) about 8cm long, found on the Alwins Field allotments, 15 August 2017.
The caterpillar likes to feed on Scots pine but there are none nearby so it must have been on a similar conifer. It was probably searching for somewhere to pupate.





Deadly nightshade - Atropa belladonna
Deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna) berries on a small bush in Linslade, 12 August 2017.
The authorities have been informed of the presence of this extremely toxic plant.

Wild carrot

Cinnabar moth larva
A cinnabar moth larva on ragwort in Linslade Woods, 1 August 2017. The yellow and black stripes are a warning that this caterpillar is poisonous if eaten.





Digger wasp

It looks as if it is taking nectar but it could equally be catching flies.
